The history of Karamellan

This café has been in operation for over 100 years and has been runned by  different owners. The name Karamellan comes from a time when caramels and sweets were delivered from Gamla Stan and sold here. The current owners chose to take back the name when they took over.

Renovations

In 2008, the Swedish Property Agency purchased Karamellan to renovate the building in collaboration with the Drottningholm Palace Administration and the Palace Theatre.

Karamellan is not classified as a listed building, but since the house is part of the protected environment on Drottningholm, the Swedish Property Board chose to preserve the exterior.

Internally, a major change was required to create a modern and accessible café & restaurant business.

For example, to create space and light in the building, the entire upper floor was removed. In addition to the café and restaurant, the building also houses Slottsboden, where you can buy souvenirs with a royal connection.

A new dining room

During the winter of 2016/2017, Karamellan received another facelift. A new dining room, the Orangeriet, has been added as well as a completely new restaurant kitchen.

The World Heritage Drottningholm is a very popular tourist destination and the expansion serves the purpose of improving service for all visitors. We have been open year-round since 2018, when we also began serving our popular Christmas buffet.

The Orangery has also become a popular option for those who want to have their wedding in a castle setting.

It is possible to book Karamellan as an event venue for, for example, anniversaries and corporate events.
